Football has been one of the last bastions of resistance against synthetic grass pitches. Almost every other sport in the world has embraced artificial turf as a viable and often preferred playing surface. Advances in the synthetic turf industry have produced a generation of artificial grass that is better in many aspects than natural grass.

Football is a sport with a long and proud tradition, and one that has historically been very resistant to change. This is why we are so grateful to the ESTO for their efforts; we know that the acceptance of artificial turf by football is a huge victory for the synthetic grass industry. The ESTO’s recently-released annual report contains a wealth of information about their efforts and cooperation with European football.

So, how widely is football beginning to accept synthetic turf? Sixteen European football leagues have played games on artificial turf for the first time since the beginning of the 2011-2012 season. The benefits that were mentioned the most often were increased usage capacity, ability to generate extra revenue, and less money spent on maintenance. According to the ETSO, clubs could use their turf more often; it gave them the ability to practice on the same turf on which they played league matches which in turn gave them more familiarity with their pitch.

They will spend a lot of their autumn days maintaining their lawns, trying to make them look as good as they can through the winter. After a summer that featured a lot of bushfires and a lot of dry weather, many lawns have been reduced to scraggly patches of brown grass with the occasional green blade.

Owners of natural grass lawns are now working hard to clear their lawns of weeds, grass clippings, and other unsightly debris. Those who are still allowed to water their lawns are spending a lot of money in an effort to recapture the image of a green, picturesque lawn. Sadly, most of them are failing miserably.

The cold of winter, even in the Perth area, will make it more difficult to produce very much green on a natural grass lawn. Luckily, there is a solution: a Green Planet Grass artificial lawn. A tournament will be in the Hague from 31st May through 15th June, 2014. The centre of the competition will be the Hockey Park in the Hague, which features two stadiums. The main venue is Kyocera Stadium, which seats 15,000 spectators. A secondary venue, which seats 5,000 spectators, will also be used for games that don’t require the larger venue.

The Dutch national team will be featured every day in a prime time match, with a total of 76 matches to be played over 14 days by 24 men’s and women’s teams from 15 different countries spanning four different continents.

The exact composition and specification of the tournament pitches has not yet been decided. The KNHB have cooperated with various manufacturers to formulate an experimental pitch, which will be tested in matches held at HC Klein Switzerland. The KNHB will closely monitor matches on the experimental pitch for playability.

After they have decided upon what they deem ideal specifications for the World Cup pitch, synthetic turf pitches will be installed to those specifications at several locations.
